Summer is the busiest renovation season in the Sacramento area, and there's a good reason for that. Schools are out, the weather cooperates, kids and pets can spend more time outside while work happens indoors.
After more than 30 years of installing flooring in greater Sacramento region, our team at Nielson Fine Floors Inc. has seen the same trend every year: Homeowners start planning projects in spring, and by early summer, schedules fill up quickly.
That’s why we put together this guide to help homeowners planning summer renovations in 2026 stay ahead, make smart decisions, and avoid some of the common issues we often see during renovation season.

There are dozens of home improvement ideas for summer, but not all of them deliver real value. After three decades of consultations across Placer County, here are the seven projects we see homeowners enjoy most, both during summer and for years afterward.
This is by far the most common summer home renovation we handle. Homeowners want their new floors in place before Thanksgiving and Christmas guests arrive, and summer is the best time to make that happen.
Here's why we believe it works in summer: flooring projects produce dust, noise, and require empty rooms. Doing it in June or July means your home is back together long before holiday entertaining starts. Plus, with kids out of school, families often travel for a week, which is the ideal window for a whole-house install.
We recently completed a whole-house hardwood install in a new construction home in West Roseville (see our picks from the renovation below). The homeowners chose European Oak by Mullican, a beautiful wide-plank engineered hardwood, and our team wrapped the project in five days. Clean lines, warm tones, and a floor that ties every room together.
For Sacramento area homes, our top picks are:
If your hardwood floors are scratched, dull, or sun-faded but structurally sound, refinishing is almost always a better summer project than full replacement. It costs less, takes less time, and gives you a brand new floor in a fraction of the timeline.
In our experience, the question we hear most is "Are my floors too far gone to save?" The honest answer is almost never. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times across its life, and even many engineered hardwoods have a thick enough wear layer to handle one or two refinishes.
Summer is the right season for this work because the dry air helps stains and finishes cure cleanly. We recommend planning for the home to be empty during the strongest fume days, which is another reason summer travel windows work so well.

Hot, dry summer days are perfect for epoxy flooring installs. Epoxy needs warm, low-humidity conditions to cure properly, which Sacramento summers deliver in abundance.
A finished epoxy garage floor adds usable square footage to your home. It resists oil, chemicals, and tire marks. It's easy to clean. And it transforms what most homeowners treat as a forgotten storage space into something that actually looks finished.
This is one of the highest-value summer projects we offer, especially for homeowners in Granite Bay, Rocklin, and Lincoln who use their garages as workshops, gyms, or kids' play space.
Below, you’ll find a collage we put together from one of our recent garage epoxy flooring projects. It gives you a closer look at the finished result and the kind of transformation you can expect.
Carpet has come a long way. Today's options from the top flooring brands like Shaw, Anderson Tuftex, and Dreamweaver by Engineered Floors are softer, stronger, and far more stain-resistant than the carpet most of us grew up with. Pet-friendly carpet, in particular, has gotten remarkably good in the last few years.
Bedrooms are where new carpet makes the biggest impact. The room feels quieter, warmer, and more restful. And because bedrooms are often the smallest install zones in a home, this is one of the easiest, lowest-disruption summer projects on the list.
Stair carpet wears faster than any other flooring in the home. Five to seven years is a typical lifespan, and most homeowners don't realize how worn it's gotten until they pull a sample of new carpet next to it.
Stairs are a one-day install for our team, and the visual impact is dramatic. A fresh, tightly wrapped stair runner makes the whole entryway feel new. We use Berber and low-pile loop styles most often for stairs because they grip well underfoot and stand up to traffic.
If your living room still has narrow strip flooring, oak parquet, or carpet from the 1990s, switching to wide-plank engineered hardwood or wide-plank luxury vinyl is the single biggest visual upgrade you can make.
Wider planks make rooms feel larger, brighter, and more modern. They photograph better, which matters if you're thinking about resale. And they pair beautifully with the open-concept layouts common in newer homes throughout West Roseville, Lincoln Crossing, Whitney Oaks, and Empire Ranch.
This one isn't glamorous, but it matters more than most homeowners think. UV exposure is the biggest cause of fading in hardwood, luxury vinyl, and carpet, especially in west and south facing rooms.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that reducing solar heat gain through window coverings is one of the most effective ways to keep a home cool and protect interior surfaces.
If you're investing in new flooring this summer, plan for window treatments at the same time. Cellular shades, roller shades with UV-blocking fabric, and exterior awnings all help. Your floors will look better in five and ten years for it.
A few hard-earned lessons from 30 years of summer installs across Lincoln, Roseville, and the rest of Placer County.
Start in April or May. By the time June hits, popular crews are already booked into August. The earlier you start the consultation process, the more flexibility you have on materials and dates.
Order materials early. Wide-plank engineered hardwood and trendier luxury vinyl collections can run four to six weeks of lead time. Some of the most popular Anderson Tuftex carpet styles are similar.
Plan around travel. If you're doing a whole-house install, the easiest week is the one when the family is out of town. We've coordinated this for hundreds of homeowners, and it's almost always the lowest-stress version of the project.
Get a free in-home measurement. This is non-negotiable for accurate pricing. Online square-footage calculators are guesswork. A 30-minute visit from our team gives you a precise quote, identifies any subfloor issues, and saves you from sticker shock later. Schedule yours here.
Confirm the install crew. Ask whether the company uses in-house installers or subcontractors. At Nielson, our crews are our own people, and our owners are on-site for the work. Big-box stores and many online sellers use subcontracted labor, which is a major source of the install issues we end up fixing for new customers.
"With thirty years of industry experience under our belts we have seen it all. Floors are the foundation of every renovation. Get them right, and the rest of your home looks better for it. We guide you every step of the way. After all, our success depends on your success."

In our experience, replacing worn flooring is the highest-impact summer renovation for homes in Lincoln and the greater Sacramento area. It transforms how the home looks, sounds, and feels, and it's something our family-friendly install schedule is built around. Engineered hardwood and luxury vinyl plank are our two most popular picks for summer 2026 projects.
Costs vary widely depending on scope. As a starting point for flooring renovations: carpet typically runs $3 to $8 per square foot installed, luxury vinyl plank runs $5 to $12 per square foot installed, and engineered hardwood runs $9 to $20 per square foot installed. Bigger projects like full kitchen remodels often run $40,000 and up in our area. We always provide free, transparent estimates so you know the numbers before you commit. For more cost guidance, see our budgeting tips for new floors.
Single-room flooring installs usually take one to two days. Whole-house installs run three to seven days, depending on square footage and prep work. Refinishing existing hardwood usually takes three to five days including cure time. Bigger remodels (kitchens, bathrooms, additions) typically run four to twelve weeks. We always provide a clear timeline before work starts.
It depends on the floor's condition and your goals. If your hardwood floors are structurally sound but scratched or dull, refinishing is usually the better value. If the floors are buckled, water-damaged, or you simply want a different style or wider plank, replacement is the right call.
If you're dealing with a leak or flooding, our water damage restoration guide walks you through next steps. We'll give you an honest read at your free in-home consultation.
